It seems that over half of the new people have problems with this - explicitly asking things like "how can I shield myself" and not showing any realization of the fact that they can control it. (Lack of knowledge is not the same as lack of ability) So as a result I would like to make this post, to help those who want to know: Please post, here, your techniques for shielding and/or grounding. If there's anything special about them - e.g. what type of shield, etc. - please describe them. Let's try to make this the "point newbies to this post" for this question. A good place to start is doing chi gung, tai chi, taiko, aikido, reiki etc... Learning about your energy flow allows you to center it and yourself. Daily exercises will assist as maintenance. Shielding is more like visualization in order to activate your energy system to DO something specific - most of the time this system in your body is more automatic - giving it intentional instruction is merely a matter of deciding to do it and then doing it - practice as much as you can, you learn by doing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Simple meditation techniques such as breath awareness (feel the movement of the air through the various respiratory organs, as well as on your lips and nose) are good for gaining clarity and stability if you practice with them when you're already calm before calling on them in a time of need. The natural movement of waste energy is downward, so if you're using a shielding technique, it might be more efficient to deflect unwanted energy downward, rather than trying to absorb or reflect the full power of the hit. "Grounding" is a useful term to remember here. In electrics, this means connecting a wire to a point deep in the earth, so that excess or dangerous energy will go there, rather than harming someone. Grounding for an empath is exactly the same deal, the excess energy goes into the earth. An alternative to shielding and grounding that requires less energy (but may require more practice, depending on how well it suits you) is to not have the energy hit you in the first place. Just as light will pass straight through a clear glass without the glass heating up, so energy can pass straight through you and out the other side if you can be so open that it passes straight through. Posts: 322 Dec 26 05 6:00 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A great little habit or tiny ritual for every day as well as before any outings or encounters with groups in general or specific people that "rub you the wrong way." I always regret when I forget to do this. LOL This exercise will protect you yet it won't shut down your empathic abilities so you will still be able to sense the things you need to. Zip up! Stand straight; closing eyes is optional. Take a few deep cleansing breaths (in through nose, out through mouth; the belly should protrude and retract, rise and fall if laying down) Bring your two hands together in front of your root chakra, they need not be clasped, just together. Keeping hands together, bring your hands up your center line to just past your bottom lip but not above your top lip. At this point allow your hands to come apart as they continue up and outward before arching back downward at either side of you, ulitimately resting close to your body again at your sides. (think of making a heart from your top lip to your hips) It is very important not to just let your hands drop once you reach your lips. Doing this unzips you. Regardless of your techniques, it is important to put your body in a relaxed, calm state and to quiet your emotions. I will take a moment and draw white light into my body while consciously relaxing my muscles. Most of us will tense up when we encounter negative energy, yet this will attract even more negativity. It is so important to relax in order to avoid being affected by negative energy. Any process of relaxation will work. If you do encounter negative energy, begin to visualize or imagine a peaceful feeling. By visualizing the feelings that you want, you will not pick up negative energy. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, one that is causing you trouble or is draining to you, begin to broadcast love. As love goes out, it protects the sender and stops any drain of energy. Sealing or closing your third eye chakra is also a great tool for shielding. Just visualize your third eye slowly shrinking, limiting the amount of information to be received. One of the most important lessons that I learned is that the emotions of other people can exhaust or capture my energy only to the degree to which I allow these same feelings within to capture me. Other people's feelings awaken within you your matching emotions through the principle of resonance. In other words, no one can harm you with negative, intense, or powerful emotions unless you have those same emotions within. As you learn to calm your own emotions, you will learn to handle other people's strong emotions. Being empathic can certainly be a double edged sword, but it is indeed a gift that many of us are given. It is so important to be aware of your own feelings, emotions, and reactions. Know thyself, in other words. It's good to remember that a trained mind creates emotional calm and inner peace by focusing on higher ideals, wisdom, and love.

Posts: 6 Jan 11 06 11:35 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I know I'm new here and I hope it's all right for me to add my own techniques here as well.... One of the best grounding techniques I've learned to date, is first getting myself into a state of relaxation and then imagining an anchor starting at the base of my neck, dropping down through my spine, through the floor and into the Earth. Then dropping two more diagonally out of the sides of my occiput into the Earth. And finally one out of my third eye to the Earth. These anchors allow us to move freely, but keep ourselves grounded. As for shielding, there are many things I do.... One of the best is to just surround myself with the white light of the God and Goddess (the Holy Spirit) allowing only that which is good and positive in and keeping all negativity out. But at times I need a stronger shield... that is when I burn some white sage or incense. I do other things as well but these are the ones that work the best I have found... I hope these help.

Senior Member Posts: 184 Jul 31 06 9:45 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I know that I am a newbie, but part of this made sense to me because I have had and practive self hypnosis and guided imagery for awhile now. so it was one of the second natured things to me. I lay down on the bed or couch and get comfortable. I find my center which for me I have found is my third eye, my brow chakra. I meditate for a few minutes on feeling balanced and in a good place. then I put up my arms to the sky and draw down the sun energy and feeling the warmth and thanking the God of the Heavens for this. I visualise the sun energy entering me as a soft yellow filling up my body from my toes upwards. and when it gets to my head, I again say thank you and put my arms to the side and put up a protective, healing orb around me, and where I am laying and over and above me using any extra sun energy . I then say thank you to the God and say I have received what I needed. and put my arms down I then see myself putting down into the floor and the floor below etc a long tendril that comes from my tail bone. it goes into the ground and then spreads out like roots and I feel the coolness of the ground and the moisture. I visualise the coolness coming up that tap root and into my body in a white light, combining with the yellow that is already there. I feel as if I should be glowing brightly now. I just let this happen for awhile and ask for the Goddess of the Earth to revitalise me and to help me. sometimes I do fall asleep. other times I just seem to bask in the energy of the sun and the earth. when I am done, I ask for the extra energy to be taken back to the earth with any negativity and I thank the earth for refreshing me. and I keep what I need for the rest of the day. I then use my hands again, to withdrawl the circle and then put the sun energy back up into the heavens. and I thank the God once again.
